چکیده

Increasing the total lipid concentration and modifying the fatty acid profile in forage may increase energy intake and productivity of animals and improve the attributes of meat and milk for human health. To predict the outcome of modifying these traits in ryegrass, 3 groups of weaned lambs (n=15 per treatment) grazed ryegrass (4% total lipid) and received twice-daily oral doses of oil at 0, 28 or 56 ml/day. The oil consisted of a blend of 75% linseed oil (high in linolenic acid) and 25% sunflower oil (high in linoleic acid). For the 2 groups receiving oil the total dietary lipid concentration was increased to simulate ryegrass having medium (6%) or high (8%) total lipid. Average daily liveweight gain (238 g/day) and carcass weight (16.9 kg) were not significantly affected by lipid concentration in the diet. However, lambs eating the simulated high-lipid ryegrass ate 16% less dry matter (1285 vs 1530 g/d, P=0.07) but had 33% higher feed conversion efficiency (85 vs 64 g carcass gain/kg intake, P<0.05) than control lambs. Blood plasma and carcass meat from lambs given oils contained lower concentrations of short chain, saturated fatty acids and higher concentrations of poly-unsaturated fatty acids. These simulated changes to ryegrass indicate that modifying the lipid concentration and fatty acid profile in ryegrass could have a feed-sparing effect and improve the human-health attributes of meat from lambs finished during the spring.

Effect of Dietary Rapeseed Meal on Fatty Acid Profile of Lamb Carcass

The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of feeding rapeseed (27%, DM basis) and sunflower biodiesel by-products as protein supplements on fatty acid composition (FA), profile (ratios and indices),enzyme activitiesfrom thecarcassin lambs fed cereal-based diets. Simultaneously, itwas examined the relationship between ingested FA and carcass FA. Samples were obtaine dfrommal efa...

Volatiles and water- and fat-soluble precursors of Saanen goat and cross Suffolk lamb flavour.

This paper evaluates the concentrations of water- and fat-soluble precursors of meat flavour, with the aim of characterising the effect of species on the volatile profile of grilled goat and lamb meat. Compared to goat, lamb meat had higher levels of saturated fatty acids--SFA, monounsaturated fatty acids--MUFA and polyunsaturated fatty acids--PUFA and similar levels of sugars and free amino ac...

Fatty acid composition and eating quality of lamb types derived from four diverse breed × production systems.

Carcass composition, muscle fatty acids and eating quality of loin chops were examined in ram lambs from four diverse breed × production system groups: pure Welsh Mountain off upland flora, pure Soays off lowland grass, Suffolk crosses off lowland grass and Suffolk crosses off concentrates. The two Suffolk groups had heavier and better muscled carcasses than the others and Soays were particular...

The forage type (grazing versus hay pasture) fed to ewes and the lamb sex affect fatty acid profile and lipogenic gene expression in the longissimus muscle of suckling lambs.

Meat intramuscular fat (IMF) contributes to meat quality and consumer acceptance. Molecular events that occur during IMF deposition and the identification of genes that are differentially expressed during this process are important to the design of an optimal nutrition plan for animals. In the present study, we examined the effect of the forage type (grazing vs. hay pasture) fed to ewes and the...

Does Omega-3 Fatty Acid Supplementation Have Beneficial Effects on Plasma Homocysteine, Insulin Resistance and Lipid Profile of Type 2 Diabetic Patients? A Randomized Clinical Trial

Background: This study was conducted to determine the effects of n-3 PUFAs supplementation on plasma homocysteine (Hcy) level, lipid profile and insulin resistance in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Methods: This study is a double-blind controlled trial involving 70 patients with T2D selected from Yazd Diabetes Research Center in 2013. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either 2 g/...
